단독으로 사용시에는 통상the를 앞에 두고「in the afternoon」과 같이 부사구로 사용하지만,tomorrow afternoon 내일 오후에, yesterday afternoon 어제 오후에, this afternoon 오늘 오후에, every afternoon 매일 오후에와 같이 두개의 단어가 함께 부사구를 이룰 경우에는 in과 the를 사용하지 않는다.
